X-tra Fine Antique Shell Cameo Brooch of Antinous Vertumnus in 14k Gold

Offered is a very fine antique carved shell cameo brooch. It features the subject of Antinous Vertumnus, lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The carving is that of a master hand, with intricate detail in good crisp relief and gorgeous coloring to the shell. Antinous cameos are highly desired and collected, and if you can find one- usually quite pricey. This beautiful example is set in a plain 14k bezel with early locking clasp, marked 14k. This dates to the late Victorian, Edwardian era. It measures 1 7/8" by 1 7/16" and weighs 8.2 grams. It is in very good to excellent antique used condition, with a few faint internal hairlines barely noticeable. This is a very beautiful example of a very sought after subject.
