    Description

For sale is an original circa 1845-1850 ninth-plate daguerreotype of a West Point or VMI cadet in fancy dress and shako.
From an estate in Mississippi, daguerreotype is in very good condition, with oxidation around the edges and in a few spots on the image. Handsome cadet has a very distinctive face and could possibly be identified. There's a very good chance he served in the Civil War, possibly for the Confederates, given where this photograph was found. His shako is very similar to one seen next to Gouvernor K. Warren, in a famous 1850 daguerreotype taken when he was a West Point cadet, although VMI is also a possibility, as cadets there had similar shakos. One of only a small handful of extant daguerreotypes of US military school cadets I have been able to track down, a fine example, and fresh to the market.
