DAGUERRREOTYPE BY D.B. JOHNSON UTICA, NY BONNET LADY IN THROWING FLOWERS CASE
& ORIGINAL SEALS -
The attractive likeness of this woman was captured by a Utica Daguerreian named, D.B. Johnson who in Craig's Daguerreian Registry states the following regarding his career:
"
Listed as a daguerreian in Utica, N.Y., possibly pre-1850 to 1858. In 1850-1851 he advertised he had removed his gallery to 162 Genesee Street, upstairs. He was listed at that address through 1855. In 1851-1852 he advertised as the "gold-enameled daguerreotype artist." He listed various residence addresses. From 1855 to 1857 he was listed in Tibbett's Block, and lived at 10 Cottage Street. In 1857-1858 he was listed without a business address, and lived at 10 Broadway. In 1858-1859 he was listed as a watchmaker. Prior to moving his gallery in 1850, he was listed at 94 Genesee Street. He was said to have been one of the best daguerreians west of new York City."
The sixth plate captures this lovely young woman wearing her finest bonnet, lace gloves and ornate shawl.
Subtle warmth was added to her cheeks. The image rests in a rarer pictorial leatherette case known as, "Throwing Flowers," depicting a young girl dropping pedals from above her head. I guarantee you will cherish this sixth plate cased likeness in your collection.
CONDITION
: Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The sixth plate image contains excellent contrast, wonderful tonal range and beautiful sharpness. I was lucky enough to acquire her portrait with the original glass and seals tightly intact and not in any need of being resealed. There are a few minor spots of dust, but overall there is no tarnish, wipes or mold spiders to be found on her lovely image.
The image resides in a rare case as mentioned with a nicely restored leather hinge, both working clasps and a golden velvet pillow adjacent to her likeness. Overall, a spectacular cased sixth plate by a well respected New York operator. I will ship this item carefully packaged by Priority Mail to the winner.
