    Description

RE-OPENING THE DEBATE. We’re presented with people standing up or sitting upright, gazing into the horizon, and they’re called postmortems. Usually they are not. American people were actually pretty conservative with their postmortems and most do not defy gravity.
But here is a case that is compelling: Is this a freckled loving mother cradling her deceased child, or is she simply holding a sleeping infant?
    DATE. Mid 1840s.
    SIZE. Sixth plate.
HOUSING. MYRON SHEW case, Philadelphia. See the backwards print inside the case. Please note that the case is split.
CONDITION. Bad glass replaced with hand cut, high-quality, low-iron glass by my son. Resealed. Tarnish line encroaches a bit on the right side, but it's away from the action. Mat abrasions.
    APPEARANCE. Loving composition. Strong image.
